Cursor AI is an AI-powered coding assistant that helps developers increase productivity and build software faster.

It's an integrated development environment (IDE) with capabilities such as code generation, autocompletion, smart rewrites, and codebase understanding.

Cursor was developed by Anysphere, an AI development lab that's creating human-AI hybrid products for programmers. Anysphere was founded in 2022 and launched Cursor in 2023.

The product was an instant success, reaching $100 million in annual recurring revenue (ARR) in its first 12 months — the fastest SaaS company ever to hit that milestone. Just nine months later, in November 2025, it crossed $1 billion in ARR.

Unsurprisingly, investors piled in.

In November 2025, Anysphere closed a $2.3 billion Series D at a $29.3 billion valuation, nearly triple the $9.9 billion mark from just five months earlier and up almost 12x from December 2024.

And now, it may be acquired by SpaceX.

SpaceX to acquire Cursor

In April 2026, SpaceX obtained the rights to buy Cursor for $60 billion.

The deal allows SpaceX to acquire Cursor later this year or pay $10 billion* for the companies' work together.

*This is essentially a breakup clause for if the deal falls through.

The announcement comes just two months after SpaceX's acquisition of xAI, Musk's artificial intelligence lab.

Its work with, and potential acquisition, of Cursor should give the rocket-satellite-AI company a meaningful boost as it works to catch up with rivals in AI coding tools and related applications.

SpaceX isn't immediately acquiring Cursor because of the rocket company's upcoming initial public offering. A major transaction would require SpaceX to update its filings and financial details, potentially delaying the IPO.

Prior to the SpaceX deal, Cursor had been in talks to raise $2 billion at a $50 billion valuation. Cursor is no longer proceeding with the round, as its computing needs are now being handled by xAI.

Can you buy Cursor stock?

Cursor's deal with SpaceX gives SpaceX the right to buy Cursor later in the year for $60 billion.

Until it does, Cursor will continue operating as an independent company (though it will be working closely with SpaceX and xAI).

Anysphere, the lab behind Cursor, is a private company. There is no Anysphere stock symbol, and it doesn't trade on any public market.

That said, its shares do trade on Hiive, an investment platform where accredited investors can buy shares of pre-IPO companies.

Accreditation requirements

To qualify as an accredited investor, you must meet one of the following criteria:

  • Have an annual income of $200,000 individually or $300,000 jointly.
  • Have a net worth that exceeds $1,000,000, excluding your main residence.
  • Be a qualifying financial professional.

Thousands of VC-backed startups have shares available for purchase on Hiive, including SpaceX, Databricks, Perplexity, Figure AI, xAI, and more.

At the time of this writing, there are 19 live orders of Anysphere available:

Each of these live orders was created by a unique seller who owns shares of Anysphere. These sellers may be employees, venture capitalists, or angel investors.

After registering and verifying their identity, each seller sets their own asking price and quantity of shares they want to sell.

Once a listing is available, buyers can accept the seller's asking price or place bids on the shares. Buyers can see the complete order book — all bids, asks, and recent transactions — for every company listed on Hiive.

Buyers can also add companies to their watchlists and receive notifications of any new listings or successful transactions.

Note: Because secondary pricing and availability can vary by platform, it can be worth comparing platforms to make sure you're getting the best price. In addition to Hiive, Forge is another large secondary exchange that may have different sellers, order blocks, or pricing at any given time. If you're serious about investing in Cursor, it may make sense to check both platforms before investing.

Can retail investors buy Cursor?

Unfortunately, since Anysphere is still private, there's no direct way for retail investors to buy its stock.

Both Nvidia (NVDA) and Google (GOOGL) participated in its Series D in November 2025, but any exposure through them is minimal. Their stakes are immaterial relative to the size of their businesses, which are valued at roughly $4.9 trillion and $4.1 trillion, respectively.

At this point, the best option for retail investors is to wait until SpaceX's IPO, which is expected to come in June. That said, there are two things to keep in mind:

  1. SpaceX may not acquire Cursor. The previously announced deal gives SpaceX the right to buy Cursor — the acquisition hasn't happened yet.
  2. If the acquisition does occur, Cursor will represent a small portion of SpaceX. SpaceX is targeting a $2 trillion IPO. At a $60 billion valuation, Cursor would make up 3% of the combined entity.

All that to say, there aren't any good options for retail investors to gain meaningful exposure to Cursor.

Alternatives to investing in Cursor

Alternatively, if you're bullish on AI-enabled programming tools, you could invest in one of Cursor's publicly traded competitors instead of waiting for its IPO.

Here are a few options:

  • Microsoft: Microsoft (MSFT) is a major player in the AI and developer tools market. Its GitHub Copilot provides intelligent code suggestions, competing directly with Cursor's capabilities. Microsoft also owns 27% of OpenAI, whose models are used in many AI coding tools.
  • Google (Alphabet): Google (GOOGL) also provides AI-enabled tools for software development, including Google Cloud AI, Colab, and Gemini.
  • Amazon: In addition to providing some of its own AI coding tools, Amazon (AMZN) has invested $13 billion in Anthropic (and has committed another $20 billion), the company behind Claude. Anthropic also offers Claude Code (a version of Claude optimized for coding tasks) and Claude Cowork (a version built for assisting with general knowledge work).

You could also gain general exposure to this market by investing in artificial intelligence ETFs like CHAT, ARTY, and AIQ or cloud computing ETFs such as SKYY, WCLD, and CLOU.

Who founded Anysphere?

Anysphere was started in 2022 by Sualeh Asif, Arvid Lunnemark, Aman Sanger, and Michael Truell, who became friends during their time as students at MIT.

Cursor was launched in 2023* and reached $100 million in annual recurring revenue (ARR) in less than 12 months, with more than 360,000 developers paying between $20–40 per month for access (and millions more on its free plan).

*A few months after launching Cursor, Anysphere was accepted into OpenAI's accelerator, which concluded with $8 million in seed funding led by OpenAI's Startup Fund.

Today, Cursor has around 300 employees and is generating over $1 billion in ARR.

How much is Anysphere worth?

Anysphere has raised a little more than $3.3 billion over 5 rounds:

  1. October 2023 (Seed): Anysphere raised $8 million led by OpenAI's Startup Fund.
  2. August 2024 (Series A): Anysphere raised $60 million at a $400 million valuation led by Andreessen Horowitz (a16z).
  3. December 2024 (Series B): Anysphere raised $105 million at a $2.5 billion valuation co-led by Thrive Capital and Andreessen Horowitz (a16z).
  4. June 2025 (Series C): Anysphere raised $900 million at a $9.9 billion valuation, also co-led by Thrive Capital and Andreessen Horowitz (a16z).
  5. November 2025 (Series D): Anysphere raised $2.3 billion at a $29.3 billion valuation with participation from Accel, Thrive, Andreessen Horowitz, DST, Coatue, NVIDIA, and Google.

SpaceX's right to acquire Cursor would value the AI coding startup at $60 billion, more than double its November 2025 valuation.

Here's a look at how its valuation has changed over time (estimate mine):
